Calladitas No More Professor Ramos Blog

Calladitas No More Marissa Diaz English 261 15 May 2019 Calladitas No More Identity is developed from a young age. For some people their identity is hard to define, or it is hard for them to pinpoint where they stand. Not being able to identify with an identity can be confusing. In â€Å"How to Tame a Wild Tongue† Gloria Anzaldà ºa examines the negative attitudes towards the Spanish Chicanos speak and how that in turn creates a confusion in identities. American Identity is not only singular, and language is part of identity. â€Å"How to Tame a Wild Tongue† by Gloria Anzaldà ºa examines how language plays a role in shaping identity. The author remembers being shamed for being caught speaking Spanish. She recalls, â€Å"If you want to be American speak ‘American’†¦ if you don’t like it go back to Mexico where you belong† (1521). As a young child the author is already being isolated and cast out because of the language that she speaks. The assault on her identity does not stop at school, at home she is also judged on her ability to speak. The narrator recalls, â€Å"‘que vale toda tu educacià ³n si todavà a hablas ingles con un ‘accent’’ my mother would say mortified that I spoke English like a Mexican† (1521). This creates a sense of shame for not speaking like an American. It makes one feel as if they need to distance themselves from their culture. Additionally, Anzaldà ºa highlights how Chicanos are shamed for not speaking Spanish well or at all. She recalls being bitterly called, â€Å"cultural traitor†¦ speaking the oppressor’s language by speaking English [and] ruining the Spanish language. For Chicanos there is no refuge in either of the two ethnic groups that make up their identity. Anzaldà ºa bares her insecurities but she embraces them. She proudly declares, â€Å"I will no longer be made to feel ashamed for existing, I will have my voice†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (1526). Anzaldà ºa has accepted that she will not fit in with native English or Spanish speak. She embraces the identity of those like her. She describes Chicanos as, â€Å"humildes yet proud, quietos yet wild, nosotros los mexicanos will walk by the crumbling ashes as we go about our business† (1529). Anzaldà ºa embraces that she does not fit in and she inspires others to embrace the diversity within and to reminds chicanos they come from resilient people. â€Å"Sources of Resilience Among Chicano/a Youth: Forging Identities in the Borderlands† explores how the ethnic identities contribute to resilience of Mexican American/Chicano youth that live near the border. The article notes, â€Å"Second generation Mexican American adolescents may hear origin and survival stories from their families that bear little resemblance to textbook, media, and popular accounts written from the perspective of the dominant culture, They may feel pressured to identify as Mexican in their homes and communities, but to act â€Å"American† in school and work contexts† (Holleran 4). From a young age Chicanos are leading two separate identities, these two separate world views conflict. This confusion is said to cause conflict and this in turn leads Mexican-American youth down troubled paths, â€Å"Chicano/a adolescents draw upon traditional cultural values and beliefs as a means of making meaning and coping with their world. These findings contrast with conclusions of researchers who suggest that Chicano adolescents join gangs because they are rootless or decultured† (8). It is not being confused that get’s chicano/a youth in trouble it is the negative stereotypes and stigmas that people hold that make youth feel worthless. This feeling makes chicano/a youth to act immorally. Having bicultural identities does not leave youth vulnerable. The article concludes that having bicultural identities produces strength. The article concludes, â€Å"traditional values and beliefs that give meaning to adolescents’ experiences, guide their behavior, and inspire positive life† (12). The traditions one learns from one culture can help navigate through the contrasting culture of another. The article states, â€Å"adherence to these traditional Mexican American values and beliefs may fortify ethnic identity, give meaning to experience, and assist Chicano/a youth in forging adaptive bicultural identities† (12). The complexity within these two cultures forms resilience in Chicano/a youth as they are able to navigate through both by taking values from both. Calladitas and Calladitos no more, Chicanas and Chicanos are redefining what it means to be American. They are breaking down negative stereotypes and embracing their identities. Whether one speaks Spanish or not there is much to gain from Gloria Anzaldà ºa’s â€Å"How to Tame a Wild Tongue.† Anzaldà ºa imparts to readers to embrace who they are. Language unifies people, people should use their voices to tell their stories and create conversations rather than shut each other out. Holleran, Lori K., and Margaret A. Questions - Program Evaluation Method Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Questions - Program Evaluation Method - Essay Example (Julian, 1997) 1. Objectives, activities, outcome measures of the logic model maybe unclear or missing. This is because logic models contain lists of each of the elements of a logic model without specifying which item on one list is related to which item on another list. This can easily lead to confusion regarding the relationship among elements or result in accidental omission of an item on a list of elements. 2. Too much (or too little) information maybe provided on the logic model. The logic model should include only the primary elements related to program/project design and operation. As a general rule, it should provide the "big picture" of the program/project and avoid providing very specific details related to how, for example, interventions will occur, or a list of all the agencies that will serve to improve collaboration efforts. 3. Objectives maybe confused with activities. The project evaluator must make surethat items listed as objectives are in fact objectives rather than activities. Anything related to program implementation or a task that is being carried out in order to accomplish something is an activity rather than an objective. For example, hire 10 staff members is an activity that is being carried out in order to accomplish an objective such as improve response time for incoming phone calls. Even though it leaves out information, a good model represents those aspects of an initiative that, in the view of the stakeholders, are most important for understanding how the effort works. The developers will go through several drafts before producing at a version that the stakeholders agree accurately reflects their story. If the information will become overly complex, it will be possible to create a family of related models, or nested models, each capturing a different level of detail. One model could sketch out the broad

Analysis of Leadership Style and Behavior Essay

Analysis of Leadership Style and Behavior - Essay Example Bill Gates owns transformational leadership and employs the participative leadership style and behavior to convince his subordinate in the most appropriate way. Bill Gates uses its legitimate power to exercise his control over the management of the Microsoft. Table of Contents Content page Introduction 4 Background 4 Analysis of leadership style 4 Analysis of leadership behavior 5 Discussion: Transformative or Transactional leader 6 Discussion: Power sources 8 Legitimate power 8 Coercive power 9 Reward power 9 Information power 9 Expert power 9 Referent power 10 Conclusion 10 References 12 Introduction Transactional leadership provides incentives to followers to carry out certain actions; rewards and incentives are used to attract or motivate followers to carry out such activities. If Bill Gates had transactional leadership traits, it would have not been possible to convert a small innovation company into the empire of Microsoft Company, which has generated revenue of $ 69,943 m in t he fiscal year of 2011; the net income reaching the mark of $ 23, 150 m in the same year. Background Bill Gates was born on October 28, 1955 and grew up in Seattle with his father William H. Gates II who is a Seattle attorney (News Centre, 2012). Gates mother, Mary Gates was a school teacher in University of Washington regent and chairwoman of United Way International. Bill Gates received elementary school and the private Lakeside School. There, Bill Gates found his interest in software and commenced programming computers at the age of 13. Subsequent to that, in 1973, Gates entered Harvard University but he was unable to continue further his studies and after leaving Harvard, he utilized his energy and efforts to Microsoft, which began in 1975 with Paul Allen, a childhood friend of Bill Gates. Under the leadership of Bill Gates, Microsoft mission has been to continually improve software technology along with making it cost effective and more enjoyable for computer users. Leadership style and behavior Analysis Analysis of leadership style Transformational leadership occurs when individuals engage with each other in a way that the follower and the leader raise one another to higher status of motivation and morality. Effective transformational leaders may represent transactional behaviors or traits. But their leadership style also consists of one or more of the characteristics including inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, individualized consideration and idealized vision (Bass 1985). Participative and delegative leadership style is considerably adopted by Bill Gates. By employing both leadership styles, Bill Gates optimally uses his workforce. He wants them to provide their contribution and participation in the work. And at the same time, he expects them to develop a feeling that they are the significant part of the Microsoft. The advantages of this approach are that the employees would remain motivated and give their best efforts in order to ente rtain the work related goals and objectives. However, some critics contend that Bill Gates uses autocratic approach and prefers to attain his corporate objectives as wants to; Bill Gates adopts bureaucratic management style to achieve the commercial objectives (Management paradise, n.d.). Analysis of leadership behavior Transformational leadership supports behaviors attached with inspirational motivations (e.g., expressing a vision that followers find meaningful but challenging),

The True Face of Beauty Essay Example for Free

The True Face of Beauty Essay When you look in the mirror what do you see? Obviously you see yourself, but do you see yourself as you truly are? Studies show that most women see themselves as less than they really are. The majority of the population of women in this world are constantly pointing out their flaws, leaving out all the beautiful things about themselves. Everyone has beauty within them even if it isnt visible at first glance. When asked what a beautiful woman looks like, a majority of the population will describe a Photo Shopped model theyve seen in a magazine. These people are myths, they don actually exist. There is not one person in this world that is perfect and thats OK because our flaws, strengths and weaknesses are what differentiate each and everyone of us to the rest of the world. Media doesnt have the right to label beauty to a certain image, because there isnt an image that shows all the different races, cultures and ethnicity. Also, you can forget about defining true beauty. Like a picture, a definition cannot possibly describe all the different characteristics that make a person beautiful. Most people see inner beauty as a joke. Which makes sense because if you cant see it who knows if it really exists. Men usually say that theyre attracted to someone because of the their looks but thats not entirely true. They first look at a girl because of their looks but the attraction, that comes after they first talk to her. Thats why first impressions are so important, but dont judge too quickly because (quoting from Facebook), The girl you just called fat? She has been starving herself and has lost over 30lbs. The girl you just called ugly? She spends hours putting make-up on hoping people will like her. There are a few more but they arent relevant. Just to say that you shouldnt be to quick to judge. Talk to a person and get to know them and their story. At that point you can start forming your opinion on them. Fashion is another issue when it comes to beauty. Since when does the clothes we wear determine if were beautiful or not . People need to stop judging. Our clothes determine our personal preferences and sometimes a bit of our personality. If a piece of clothing was made, there has to be at least one other person, somewhere in the world that also liked it. It has come to the point where even religious women are being judged by what they wear. If a Muslim woman believes that the burqa or hijab should be worn, then she should have the right to wear it without being criticized. Clothing, judgment, race, religion, culture and ethnicity shout not be the only factors that categorizes you as beautiful. Like the the word says, you need to BE-YOU to be beautiful.

Lotus Case Study :: essays research papers

Executive Summary & Problems In The Beginning   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Lotus Development Corporation was created by Mitch Kapor, a software designer whose initial goal was to develop a sophisticated spreadsheet program. The company was founded in 1982 and its headquarters based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1983 Lotus created the first killer application, 1-2-3 DOS for the IBM PC, catapulting them into the largest software company in the world. Lotus was noted as being one of the finest franchises in their business sector. The Rise and Fall Up to 1983 Lotus operated in a largely college industry were only a handful of companies created killer apps such as WordPerfect. Between 1983-1986, Lotus had created Symphony and Jazz which were the first fully integrated application programs to combine word-processing, spreadsheets, graphics, and database management. However, the market responded negatively to the introduction of these products. During 1986, Imitation by Borland and the limited success of Symphony and Jazz prompted newly elected president Jim Manzi to approach product development in at a new angle. Jim Manzi began an acquisition program that would give Lotus, products in every applications category, ultimately resulting in Notes. . Competition Heats Up Competition in the industry was intense during 1990. Borland and Microsoft had both emerged as large competitors of Lotus. Each had develop duplicate versions of Lotus ¡Ã‚ ¦s 1-2-3- program. The popularity of Microsoft surprised the industry when the company introduced a bundled  ¡Ã‚ §suite ¡Ã‚ ¨ that included its spreadsheets, word processors, graphics package, and database manager. There strategic approach to software development and marketing led to a growing market share for the company. Initially Lotus did not write a version of 1-2-3 for Windows because they did not want to help Microsoft build their contribution margin and attain market acceptance. However, over time Lotus could not ignore the growing success of Microsoft so they eventually rushed a flawed a version of 1-2-3 for Windows to market in 1991. The release of the product caused Lotus great embarrassment, because they reacted to the situation instead pf being proactive in the beginning they made a decision and introduced a product that was not ready for market. Lost Opportunity In 1990 Lotus made an attempt to gain a significant share of the network application industry by initiating merger negotiations with Novell. The merger of the two companies would have created the largest computer software company in the world. The combined sales for Lotus and Novell in 1989 were $978 million, compared with Microsoft ¡Ã‚ ¦s $804 million during the same year.

Econs Tut

The policies directed at the capital account could include interest rate policy, action policy (related to Foreign Direct Investments) and complementary infrastructure and Other supply side policies such as employer CAP levels. To manipulate current account, the government by and large does not use protectionism except for domestic service sectors, such as banking, fiscal policy due to small multiplier and does not aggressively undervalue currency because of fears of imported inflation. For the capital account, since we have elected to choose exchange rates and free capital movements as our two choices, it does not use interest rate and UAPITA controls. Singapore does not want to scare away Foreign Direct Investments by implementing controls. Singapore mainly relies on supply side policies as the government tends to be more far-sighted and focuses on returns on the long run. The Balance of Payments will be analyzed as such.Even in crisis periods such as early 2009, Singapore does not react much with exchange rate changes but instead encouraging foreign and few domestic firms to remain in Singapore by offering lower wage (and subsidizing for the lowest wage) and better tax areas. The opinion is that sudden exchange rate changes are inflationary and destabilize. Therefore, the typical exchange rate policy has been one of the slow and steady appreciate of the Singapore dollar in line with gradual improvement in performance of the current account. The underlying policy behind the improved current account performance and how the exchange rate strengthened Balance of Payments come from the following. If rusty, Singapore develops current account in areas of higher value added to AP into growing world of incomes and to avoid goods where prices are volatile, such as those primary products exported by many developing countries. Also, Singapore constantly aims to raise value added to stay ahead of other countries which are building their current account. This involves increa sing expenditure on human capital and strategic alliances with firms that can make use of such labor by offering supply side support. Critic: Employer's CAP, Wage Flexibility, PR Protection, Physical infrastructure improvement, corporate tax regimes, manpower development There is not much to change because Singapore has one of the strongest current accounts in the world.
